Energy Audits

Although the term energy audit is the one most often used to describe an inspection and/or assessment of a home's energy consumption, not all energy audits are the same. There are energy inspections, energy surveys, energy assessments, home performance assessments, home energy ratings, and many more terms that all seem to fall under the banner of "energy audits." Choosing the right type of energy audit that will yield the results homeowners are looking for can be overwhelming.

How do you choose the right energy auditor?

At the present time the federal government recognizes the standards of only two institutions that certify energy auditors to perform energy inspections of residential homes; the Building Performance Institute (BPI), and the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET). Structured Energies is certified by both of these governing bodies.

The Building Performance Institute is a national standards development and credentialing organization for residential energy efficiency retrofit work – providing training through a network of training affiliate organizations, individual certifications, company accreditations and quality assurance programs. Structured Energies' owner, Jason Payne, is a certified BPI Building Analyst and has completed many home performance assessments under the Department of Energy's Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program.

RESNET's standards are officially recognized by the federal government for verification of building energy performance for such programs as federal tax incentives, the Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR program and the U.S. Department of Energy's Building America Program. RESNET standards are also recognized by the U.S. mortgage industry for capitalizing a building's energy performance in the mortgage loan. Structured Energies provides Home Energy Ratings (HERS) for Energy Efficient Mortgages and ENERGY STAR new homes certification throughout the Atlanta metro area.
